The Brownyard name means private security insurance. William “Bill” Brownyard wrote the first policies for the industry in 1962. Thanks to his legal training, he saw coverage gaps in security company policies and created new products to better serve the industry.

Brownyard MacLean Security Insurance Services, LLC (BMSIS) is a managing general underwriter and program administrator specializing in the unique exposures faced by the private security and alarm industries. Built on decades of experience within the security insurance industry, the company is the next generation insurance product provider for the traditional and evolving security service marketplace. BMSIS’s industry-focused programs are designed to deliver comprehensive, quality insurance coverages and services more efficiently to brokers, agents, and their clients.

BMSIS is excited to have formed a strategic partnership with Markel Corporation, one of the premier insurance organizations in the insurance industry. BMSIS will be the exclusive MGU and program administrator for Markel offering market-tailored insurance products for general liability and excess liability exposures as well as workers’ compensation and business auto insurance products for security-related companies from highly rated A (Excellent) Markel-affiliated companies such as Evanston Insurance Company, Markel Insurance Company, FirstComp Insurance Company, and Markel American Insurance Company.

Meet Our Principals


Matt MacLean – President & CEO

Senior insurance and legal executive at the officer level with a vast array of experience and insurance contacts over a nearly thirty-year career. Past experience includes roles as a CEO, Senior Vice President of Underwriting, and Chief Claims Officer with both publicly and privately held insurance companies that required expertise in a wide span of admitted and non-admitted business lines. Most recently, MacLean served as Senior Vice President in Crum & Forster’s Surplus and Specialty Group from 2013 to February 2021 responsible for the Security business segment. In that role, MacLean was responsible for underwriting, marketing, growth and profitability of Crum and Forster Security (formerly CoverX Security and Brownyard Programs). Mr. MacLean is currently a licensed attorney and member of the State Bar of Michigan, the United States Supreme Court, and U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He has supported and been involved with the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) International, the Monitoring Association (TMA formerly the Central Station Alarm Association), the Medical Alert Monitoring Association (MAMA), and Insurance and Indemnity Law, Negligence, and Trial Practice Section of the American Bar Association and State Bar of Michigan.

Blair Brownyard – Executive Vice President

Blair is a licensed P&C broker in California. Blair has been involved in the insurance industry since 2005 and was responsible for the expansion of Brownyard Programs into the Alarm segment of the private security market. Blair revitalized Brownyard Programs’ team and internal structures with sales goals, unique marketing initiatives, and strategic partnerships to successfully grow Brownyard Programs’ presence in the security marketplace. Most importantly, Blair’s attention to building positive and productive relationships with producers, brokers and insureds created one of the most comprehensive insurance coverage products for the security industry. Since 2011, Mr. Brownyard has been a prominent supporter of the Security industry participating and serving in member roles with the prestigious Security Services Council (SSC) for the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS), the California Association of Licensed Security Agencies, Guards & Associates (CALSAGA), the California Alarm Association (CAA), The Monitoring Association (TMA), and various regional guard, alarm, and investigative associations. During his time with ASIS, he has led training seminars on risk management, participated in establishing Standards and Practices for the security industry, and counseled the top contract guard companies through a variety of risk management scenarios and contract reviews. He also managed Brownyard Programs’ annual sponsorship of the prestigious “Ralph Day Award” for the SSC and ASIS. The Ralph Day Award was giving annually to Security Guard personnel displaying reviewing heroic acts across the U.S. and Canada. Blair obtained his Juris Doctor from Touro Law Center Central Islip, New York in 2004.

Maureen Tortorici – Senior Vice President

Maureen Tortorici is a former Vice President of Brownyard Programs and Crum & Forster Security serving as lead underwriter and overseeing all Brownyard related operations. Maureen was an integral member of Brownyard Programs throughout its history as one of the premier Program Administrators and Managing General Underwriters in the Security insurance market. Ms. Tortorici was primarily responsible for Brownyard Programs’ reputation for delivering premier servicing and coverage for producers, brokers, and Security operators throughout the Security marketplace. Like Blair Brownyard, Maureen’s attention to building positive and productive relationships with producers, brokers and insureds created one of the most comprehensive insurance coverage products for the security industry. Ms. Tortorici is a resident licensed agent/broker with a surplus lines license in the State of South Carolina. She is also a licensed non-resident agent and/or broker with a surplus lines license in all other states.

Bruce Brownyard – Consultant / Advisor

The Brownyard name has been associated with innovation, customer service, and intelligent underwriting in the Security marketplace since the first specialized policies in this segment were written by Bruce’s father, William H. Brownyard over 50 years ago. Like his father, Mr. Brownyard produced and underwrote insurance for private security guard, private investigation, alarm companies and armored car companies for over 40 years. Mr. Brownyard started his insurance career in New York City in 1970 working for CNA Insurance. In 1972, Bruce left CNA and began working for the W.H. Brownyard Corporation, a family business started by his father in 1950. During the 20+ years that he worked for W.H. Brownyard, the company slowly transformed from a local retail insurance agency into the largest Managing General Agency specializing private security guard, investigation, alarm, and armored car companies in the United States. In 1993, Mr. Brownyard left the family business and started his own wholesale insurance agency called Brownyard Programs, Ltd, specializing exclusively in the private security and investigative industry. Mr. Brownyard developed an outstanding reputation in the insurance business community and is recognized as one of the foremost experts on the subject of insurance as it relates to private security organizations. Mr. Brownyard was a licensed agent/broker in the State of New York for over 40 years. He was also a licensed non-resident agent and/or broker in forty-five other states. He was a member of the Professional Agents of New York. He has been a member of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) for over 25 years and since 1995 had been a member of their Private Security Services Council (PSSC). Mr. Brownyard was also a member of the National Council of Investigation and Security Services (NCISS), which was the largest association of independent security guard and investigation companies in the U.S.
